Technology and Culture Interaction: International Short Course by the Library and Information Science Program Introducing the Role of Libraries in Global Digital Transformation

Program Studi Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi Universitas YARSI is hosting an International Short Course titled “Digital Transformation: Interplay of Technology, Culture, and The Role of Librarianship in the Global Era,” taking place from March 5-8, 2024, online. The event gathers participants from all around the world for four days of intensive discussions and learning. The opening session featured Prof. Dr. Fasli Jalal, Ph.D., Rector of Universitas YARSI, who emphasized that in this rapidly evolving era of globalization and digital transformation, libraries and information science play a crucial role in promoting inclusive and sustainable access to information. The course explores the interplay between technology, culture, and the librarian’s role in facing global challenges and opportunities.

The course is designed to integrate cutting-edge innovations in information management, culture, and literacy, including data analysis and current information systems. The expert speakers include Wardiyono, SS, MBA, and Elfitri Kurnia Erza, M.IKom, faculty members at Universitas YARSI, along with distinguished academics such as Prof. Pimrumpai Premsmit, Ph.D., from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand; Dr. Asmadi Mohammed Ghazali from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UITM), Malaysia; Sophia Vivian Adeyeye, Ph.D., from Lead City University, Nigeria; and Prof. Datin Dr. Roslina Othman from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

The course has attracted 185 participants from various countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Pakistan, and Kenya, comprising students, library professionals, information managers, and academics from institutions like Universitas Padjajaran, Universitas Terbuka, UIN Imam Bonjol, Universitas Udayana, Universitas Pertamina, IAIN Madura, Suncity School (India), MSB Indian School, Delta State University (Nigeria), and many others.

During the Kick-Off session, Danang Dwijo Kangko, MP, explained that participants will use Universitas YARSI’s e-learning platform, LAYAR, to access course materials and engage in various activities, both synchronous and asynchronous, including lectures, discussions, reflections, quizzes, and practical exercises. The course is divided into six main topics: Integrated Library System with SLIMS, The Challenges, Barriers, and Opportunities of Information Intermediaries, Media Literacy in the Indonesian Cultural Context, Digital Transformation: Big Data and Emerging Technology for Libraries, Fostering a Vibrant Reading Culture, and Exploring the Power of Semantic Technology. The entire course is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS credits, which corresponds to 25-30 hours of study.

This event highlights the presence of the Program Studi Perpustakaan dan Sains Informasi Universitas YARSI both locally and internationally, showcasing its commitment to quality education. The course also offers an opportunity for participants to expand their professional networks, exchange innovative ideas, and explore future collaboration opportunities. According to Indah Kurnianingsih, S.I.P., MP, the Chairperson of the event, with technology integration as a central pillar, she hopes that participants will unlock their full potential in addressing the various challenges that lie ahead in the field of libraries and information.
