One Health at Global Health Security

At the Global Health Security Conference 2024, held in June in Sydney, Indonesia’s leadership and contributions to the One Health initiative were prominently featured. One Health is an integrated approach that connects human, animal, and environmental health, recognizing the interdependence of these domains in addressing global health threats. Indonesia, through its significant role in international health forums, has advanced One Health initiatives, which were central to the discussions during the conference.

During Indonesia’s G20 Presidency, a key milestone was the creation of the “Lombok One Policy Brief,” which highlighted seven key recommendations for global health resilience. These recommendations emphasized the need for a coordinated response to health threats that involve multiple sectors. Indonesia further strengthened its leadership during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023 with the endorsement of the ASEAN Leader Declaration on One Health, a critical move in solidifying the country’s commitment to this collaborative health approach.

The conference saw over 30 presentations specifically dedicated to One Health, with many more touching upon its significance in relation to emerging health challenges. Topics discussed included zoonotic diseases, their role in future pandemics, and the challenges of implementing One Health strategies. The conference underscored the importance of preparedness, prevention, and coordinated response to mitigate risks, especially concerning zoonotic diseases, which are increasingly seen as potential triggers for global health emergencies.

Indonesia’s efforts to promote One Health on both regional and global platforms were recognized as instrumental in advancing the international health agenda, positioning the country as a leader in global health security.
