On May 16, 2024, Universitas YARSI inaugurated the international workshop “Medical Genetics Update: From Genomic Clinic,” which will continue with a symposium on the following day. This event addresses pivotal issues in medical genetics, vital for the advancement of understanding hereditary diseases and the role of genomics in modern healthcare.
The workshop covers three essential areas: firstly, the fundamentals of genetics and hereditary diseases, focusing on genetic material and inherited conditions. Secondly, it highlights the advances in genomics that now enable accurate diagnosis of previously undiagnosed diseases, facilitating precise treatment through personalized medicine, with the aim of providing “the right treatment at the right dose for the right person at the right time.”
The workshop also discusses three emerging areas of individual-centered treatment: 1) Precision Medicine, which tailors treatment based on genetic insights; 2) Personalized Medicine, which integrates genetic, protein, and environmental data to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases; and 3) Targeted Treatment, which combats diseases, such as cancer, by focusing on specific molecular pathways involved in their progression.
In particular, for rare genetic diseases, discussions include preventive and diagnostic approaches, such as Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), confirmed as needed through more invasive methods like chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis.
This event is organized by the Master’s and Doctoral Biomedical programs at Universitas YARSI in celebration of the university’s 57th anniversary. Featured speakers include renowned experts from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Tunisia, Egypt, and Korea, along with leading Indonesian specialists. Furthermore, the event will initiate the AfroAsia Medical Genetics Society (AAMGS), symbolizing the international collaboration in genetics for human health advancements.
