On January 4, 2024, the Program Studi Perpustakaan dan Sains Informasi (PdSI) at Universitas YARSI successfully hosted a virtual discussion titled “Gen Z, Literasi, Kampus Sekolah: Menuju Transformasi Sosial.” The event explored the critical role of literacy in driving social transformation, particularly in the digital era.
The event began with remarks from Prof. Dr. Fasli Jalal, Rector of Universitas YARSI, who highlighted the critical need for literacy in today’s information-rich world. He pointed out that children now have access to the internet from an early age, emphasizing the necessity of fostering strong literacy skills to differentiate between trustworthy information and potential misinformation or hoaxes.
Ihsanudin, M.Hum, Chairman of the Indonesian School Library Association (ATPUSI), followed with an insightful discussion on the role of librarians in promoting literacy within schools. He also referenced Indonesia’s position in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), underscoring the need for improvements in the national education system.
Dr. H. Fahmy Alaydroes, a member of the DPR RI Commission X, discussed the importance of legislative support for literacy development in schools. He emphasized the need for librarians to drive literacy programs and urged the creation of regulations to guide these initiatives.
Finally, Dr. Gamal Albinsaid, a renowned health innovator, motivated young people to take advantage of their prime years to contribute meaningfully to society. He encouraged the youth to seize opportunities for social change, stressing that their current phase in life is a time for action.
This virtual talk was a collaborative effort between PdSI Universitas YARSI and ATPUSI, setting the tone for the year with a focus on empowering literacy and fostering social transformation.
