Global Lessons in Healthcare: Dr. John Leigh’s Guest Lecture

On November 22, 2024, the Faculty of Medicine hosted an engaging guest lecture by Dr. John Leigh titled “The Comparative Experience of Hospital Services in the UK, Africa, South Asia, and China.” The session delved into key differences in healthcare delivery across these regions, focusing on hospital infrastructure, access to care, funding models, and policy frameworks.

Dr. Leigh offered valuable insights into how cultural, economic, and political factors shape healthcare systems. He highlighted lessons from each region, underscoring the importance of adopting best practices to address global health disparities. His presentation linked these themes directly to several SDGs. For example, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being was central to the discussion, particularly in ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services. Topics on funding sustainability and addressing inequalities resonated with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. The collaborative approaches encouraged during the lecture aligned with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, promoting global partnerships to tackle shared challenges.

The event provided a platform for students, faculty, and healthcare professionals to reflect on healthcare disparities and engage in interdisciplinary dialogue. Dr. Leigh’s expert analysis inspired participants to think critically about how global best practices could be adapted to create more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable health systems.
