The review of the International Health Regulations (IHR), first implemented in 2007, is currently being held at WHO headquarters in Geneva. This intensive meeting, running from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, focuses on addressing the health challenges that have emerged since the regulations were introduced, particularly in managing infectious diseases with pandemic potential.
The main objective is to enhance global readiness for future pandemics through revisions to these critical health regulations. The meeting aims to present its findings and recommendations at the upcoming World Health Assembly in May 2024, which could offer the world more effective tools for handling future international health emergencies.
A primary goal of the IHR is for countries to build, strengthen, and maintain the capacity to respond to public health risks and emergencies, particularly those categorized as Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEIC).
The meeting places significant emphasis on WHO’s Public Health Emergency Operation Center (EOC), which monitors global public health events and collaborates with national and regional centers to ensure early detection and timely response. The WHO’s Strategic Health Operation Centre (SHOC) plays a key role in coordinating global responses to health crises, operating around the clock.
For Indonesia, expanding the EOC network at the national and local levels is crucial to ensure early surveillance, rapid response, and regional cooperation in managing public health emergencies, improving the country’s ability to prevent and contain health crises.
