Cultural Bridges: Connecting the World through Awareness

On September 27, 2023, YARSI University conducted an enriching seminar as part of its Continuous Professional Development program. With the topic of “International Cultural Awareness,” the seminar explored essential topics including “What is Cultural Awareness?”, “Why is it Important to be Culturally Aware?”, and “Cultural Awareness in International Business.” This event served as an important educational initiative that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. By raising awareness on cross-cultural interactions, the seminar helped equip participants with the knowledge needed to thrive in increasingly diverse environments.

The seminar provided insights into the significance of understanding different cultures and how this awareness fosters more inclusive societies and workplaces. Speakers emphasized that cultural awareness not only enhances communication but also reduces misunderstandings in international business settings. This, in turn, supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, as effective intercultural communication boosts cooperation and innovation across borders. Participants were introduced to a case study that challenged them to identify situations where cultural awareness might be lacking. Through group discussions and presentations, students demonstrated their understanding of how cultural insensitivity can negatively impact both personal and professional relationships.

The objectives of the seminar were threefold: to foster a deep understanding of cultural awareness and its importance, to enable participants to identify situations of cultural unawareness, and to underscore the role of cultural awareness in international work. These objectives are directly linked to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as culturally competent individuals are better equipped to form meaningful global partnerships.
