Assertiveness in Action: Thriving in Diverse International Settings

On May 21, 2023, YARSI University held a training session with the theme “Assertiveness Skills in International Settings” as part of its Continuous Professional Development (CPD) program. This training aimed to enhance participants’ ability to communicate assertively within diverse and international environments. The session covered essential topics such as “Introduction to Assertiveness: What is It? Why is It Important?”, “Definition of Communication: Passive, Aggressive, Assertive,” “How to Identify Communication Types,” and “Communication Techniques for Becoming More Assertive.” These topics align with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, by providing participants with critical skills for effective communication and professional growth.

The training included a comprehensive self-assessment and reflection exercise, allowing participants to evaluate their own levels of assertiveness and identify problem areas. Through these activities, participants gained insight into their communication styles and learned how to recognize passive, aggressive, and assertive behaviors. The session also introduced various models and techniques to improve assertiveness, which supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by fostering more effective and respectful interactions in professional settings. Participants engaged in group activities to plan and discuss strategies for applying assertiveness in real-world international scenarios, enhancing their practical skills and confidence.

By focusing on self-assessment, reflection, and the introduction of assertiveness models, the training achieved its objectives of understanding the importance of assertiveness in international contexts, reviewing and applying previous learning, and developing strategies to improve communication skills. This training contributes to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by empowering participants to navigate and communicate effectively in diverse settings, thereby promoting inclusion and equity in global interactions.
