Dicky Budiman, an academic from YARSI University in Indonesia and Griffith University in Australia, shared his insights during the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the APEC CEO Summit, held in Lima, Peru. He responded to President Xi Jinping’s message emphasizing economic openness and cross-national collaboration. During the forum, Dicky highlighted how this vision aligns closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the global roadmap for inclusive, sustainable, and mutually beneficial development.
According to Dicky, the emphasis on economic openness and collaboration championed by President Xi directly supports several SDGs, including Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by creating equitable economic opportunities across the Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, the call to address global challenges such as economic instability and climate change aligns with Goal 13: Climate Action and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, which underscore the importance of global partnerships in tackling major global issues.
He further noted that fostering interconnected paradigms among nations has the potential to reduce social and economic inequalities, advancing Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities. By promoting collaborative frameworks, APEC plays a crucial role in establishing an inclusive economic system, enabling all nations to benefit while jointly addressing pressing global challenges.
Dicky Budiman’s active participation in this forum reflects the critical role of academics in shaping policies that resonate with the SDGs. He emphasized that President Xi’s call for collaboration is not only relevant to the Asia-Pacific region but also to the global community striving to achieve sustainable development through cooperative approaches. APEC’s role as a leading economic forum provides a tangible platform to advance the SDGs in a cohesive and sustainable manner, fostering shared prosperity and stability for all.
