Genetic Disease Surgery in International Workshop and Symposium at YARSI

On May 16, 2024, Universitas YARSI inaugurated the International Workshop titled “Medical Genetic Update: From Genomic Clinic” (ISMGU). This workshop, which will continue with an international symposium on May 17, focuses on vital discussions in medical genetics.

The workshop explores the foundations of genetics, covering genetic material, inherited traits, and the hereditary diseases that may result from genetic factors. Additionally, the event emphasizes recent advances in genomics, enabling diagnoses of previously undiagnosed diseases and supporting the development of precision medicine. This approach aims to deliver “the right treatment at the right dose for the right person at the right time,” ensuring tailored and effective medical care.

The discussions also cover three main areas of individualized medicine: 1) Precision Medicine, which guides physicians in choosing treatments based on genetic insights; 2) Personalized Medicine, which leverages genetic, protein, and environmental data to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases; and 3) Targeted Treatment, which intervenes in specific molecules to halt the growth and spread of diseases, particularly cancer.

A special focus is placed on rare genetic diseases, with an emphasis on prevention and detection methods, including Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) and confirmatory invasive testing if needed. This event, part of Universitas YARSI’s 57th anniversary celebration, hosts distinguished speakers from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Tunisia, Egypt, Korea, and Indonesia. The workshop aims to expand knowledge on genetic disease management in the genomic era and includes plans to establish the AfroAsia Medical Genetic Society (AAMGS), promoting international cooperation in medical genetics research and health initiatives.
