Empowering Families Through Education: Promoting Women’s and Children’s Rights for a Better Future

On Sunday, January 14, 2024, an education program titled ‘Edukasi Hak Perempuan dan Anak dalam Meningkatkan Kualitas Keluarga’ was held in Ujung Menteng Sub-district, Cakung, East Jakarta. This community service activity aimed to enhance the community’s understanding and awareness of the importance of women’s and children’s rights in building a high-quality and harmonious family. The event was initiated by lecturers from the Faculty of Law, Universitas YARSI, namely Lusy Liany, Mohammad Kharis Umardani, and Paramaresthi Windriyani.

The activity was conducted using the participatory action method (Sanjaya, 2007), combining lectures and interactive discussions. Fifty percent of the time was allocated for lectures to deliver knowledge cognitively, while the remaining 50% was dedicated to discussions and Q&A sessions to foster awareness and motivation among participants. By actively involving the community, this method was designed to convey relevant legal information and encourage the application of principles of gender equality and children’s rights in daily life.

This program aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5: Gender Equality and Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. By educating communities about women’s and children’s rights, this initiative contributes to ending all forms of discrimination against women and children (Target 5.1) and ensures responsive, inclusive, and participatory decision-making at all levels (Target 16.7). Furthermore, the emphasis on creating harmonious and high-quality families supports Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, as empowered families are the foundation for mental and physical well-being.

Through this program, the residents of Ujung Menteng gained a deeper understanding of the importance of equality and legal awareness as a pathway to improving family quality. The constructive dialogue between the speakers and participants is expected to create a lasting positive impact that contributes to the achievement of these SDGs.
